Homework #17

Summary to Penrose & Geisler
In their article "Reading and Writing without Authority" they examine the differences between text first year students and doctoral student written about the same subject. Penrose and Geisler argue that even though first year students vs doctoral students writing does differ. First year students are more credibly than the doctoral students. They examine the differences between students reading and writing elements and the affects there teachers and surrounding have on them.
Questions 3-5
3. Janet's informational-transfer model of knowledge is more high school based to where you are given specific guidelines and you must follow them for your writing assignment. Roger's constructivist model of knowledge is more of a writing about what you already know and what information you can find out.
4. I think this was the case because because she is a freshman english student and hasn't discovered that it is important to use author's in a credibly manor and that she is still using sources in her paper like she would in high school. I think she just wanted to get the assignment done and she lacks credibility in her reading and the use of valid sources within her writing.
5. I would have to say I am in between there writing model's of knowledge because the type of model of knowledge through writing that I use depends on the assignment I am given. If I feel as if I am given more freedom within the assignment than I write more  like Roger's but if I am given an assignment with strict guidelines I write more like Janet.
Meta Moment
One thing I will take away from this article is that the way you sound and come off to readers through your writing is the level of confidence people with think that you wrote with while writing your paper. Another thing I will take away is that you need to sound experienced and knowledgeable through your writing so people see that you come off as a credibly source through your writing.
Response to Penrose & Geisler
I found this article very useful to read and I think it will help out a lot with writing a successful paper 4. I will take a lot of the information in this article into my future writing. After reading this article I understood that authority and confidence plays an important role in your writing to make your writing credibly so that others will believe what you are saying.

Homework #16

Summary to Wardle
In her article "Identity, Authority, & Learning to Write in New Workplaces" Elizabeth Wardle wants to learn how adults write who move among a variety of discourse communities. She discusses the struggles of people learning how to enculturate into a variety of discourse communities. Wardle follows a students fresh out of college who heads into the workplace and is struggling with joining the business discourse community in which he now works. She thinks of a discourse community more as an activity system than a discourse community.
Questions 3-7
3. I don't think that the community had positive results because people are skeptical to newcomers and there ideas because they are not a well known member of the community. When you enter into a new discourse community no matter what your ideas are people are not willing to listen. he If  Allan would have approached the situation by being willing to adapt into the ways of the community the members within the community may have been more willing to listen to Allan's ideas.
4. I agree that it is possible to make conscious choices when they use language without thinking about it.
5. I agree more with Gee because when Gee discusses discourse communities he explains that is possible to be excepted into many discourse communities you just have to be willing to understand the variety of lexsis and genres throughout the many communities you may join. Where with Wardle's story with Allan he was not willing to adapt into new discourse communities he just wanted you to except him as he was wasn't willing to change.
6. I agree that people like Allan are used as tools because authors can compare stories with a variety of people they interview so that they have a variety of material to compare together.
7. Well the person who assigned this article was my english professor Mr. Whicker but I can't think of a time where he lost his authority through his linguistic actions.
AEI
To have authority over texts means that people believe what you are writing and that they view you as a credible source. To have authority within your discourse community means that the community members value what you are saying. I think that with my writing and my leadership within my community I think my writing is good but I wouldn't say its always the best and my leadership within my community is excellent. A discourse community that I gained authority in is Dance I attended the same studio for 15 years and the younger girls were always looking up to the older girls also I was captain for competition. To be at the mercy of another person within the discourse community can be a good or bad thing based on the community you could view it as a learning experience but if you are at the mercy of a discourse community with poor leadership it would be an awful experience.
Response to Wardle
I found this article very interesting and somewhat easy to read, it was very easy to understand what she was saying unlike the past few articles discussing similar topics. The information I learned is very valuable. I feel as if I understand activity systems a lot easier than I understood the many examples of a discourse community it just made more sense to me.

In our website we try and persuade readers that depending on the school you attend and the money your school has affects your writing, reading, and other academic abilities. We collected a variety of research by interviewing 7 different students who attend schools that were either public, private, or boarding schools. What we concluded from this research we found that based on the school you attended does have an affect on your education. Due to the amount of money your school has and how they use it, the students who attend your school, the variety of classes and teachers plays major roles into students levels of understand literacies. Everyone in the end achieves a similar education it just depends on your level from the school they attend. Our counter arguments are that even though not all schools have an excess of money if they have quality teachers students can achieve a quality education even if they are not the richest school. Our counter argument may be lacking and we would appreciate any advice you have on improving our counter argument please focus on the main point of our article and also consider the affects on money within schools. If given more time we would have liked to use the Freedom Writer Diary to add in some sources and another view of a different form of education via inner city schools.

Homework #15

Summary to John's
In her article "Discourse Communities & Communities of Practice, uhgy Ann M. Johns discusses how communities of discourse is similar to John Swales discourse communities. She talks about the differences between academic and professional discourses. She talks about how being in a discourse community has lots of pressure on the people who are apart of the community. She also discusses the language that affects the  community and how that affects the people within the communities communication levels.
Questions 1-6
1. The first thing is cost, people who are trying to enter new discourse communities have to make trade-offs to get what they want within there new discourse community. The second thing is problem of authority within the community because there are power struggles within people within the community. The last thing is dialogue and the acts of disagreement among members.
2. The act of change within the discourse community that John's discusses is that when we get older things change. You learn new things, you grow as a person, you meet new people, & your views on certain things change as you get older.I can not think of any historical examples but I can think of life examples. I can think just when I was a younger dancer I only new the basics and than once I got older and I have danced for 15 years and that I became an advanced dancer.
3. I do not think that reading and writing affects my ability within many discourse communities because I believe that your values and beliefs are a constant reminder of that you need to stay strong and stick to what you believe in. The conflicts that occur could have a positive affects on that person after they go through them because the challenges they face will better them and make them stronger.
4. I don't think John's views on reading, writing, & speaking has an affect on your identity. Many of these things will affect you identity but based on the person that you are its up to yourself as a person and how you value what you have been taught but your views may change but no completely switch.
5. The authority I have had over texts that I have wrote in college has been very different from the writing I did in high school. College writing has challenged me a lot more than high school writing did and it has challenged to think outside the box and think hard about what I am writing papers on. We still have guidelines to follow but its not as strict as it was in high school.
6. Its considered a minefield because when you are breaking the rules you do not know what is going to happen or when. I have never been caught or rewarded for breaking the rules. Its a risk you take and their are positive and negative affects depends in the consequences.
Meta Moments
By understanding what John's is talking about makes me consider the positive and negative affects of joining new discourse communities. In a way it is not a bad thing to not join discourse communities because you are taking a chance and hoping it all works out. If I were to join a new discourse community I would follow the rules for the most part but I would probably take a few chances.
Response to John's
I found this article somewhat difficult to understand and read. When all of these authors talk about discourse communities or communities of practice it tends to all get confused in my mind. The bases of all these communities are similar so its just varies differently based on the discourse community you are involved in. I found this article helpful but also confusing at the same time.

Homework #14

Summary to Swales
In John Swales article "The Concept of Discourse Community" Swales explains the discourse community by defining the six characteristics that he believes discourse communities fall under. Swales ties in these 6 characteristics into his article so people are able to identify which community they fit into. These communities also are all based upon different genres so that you make sure you fall under the right group so that you are able to be on the same level of understanding as everyone else within your community. He really stresses the idea of a discourse community to all the readers hoping everyone can understand the point he is trying to make.
Questions 1,3,5
1. The six characteristics of a discourse community

  • 1) Having a set of goals that everyone within the community agrees on. I can connect with this characteristic because during dance competition we all have a goal of getting the highest score of the day.
  • 2) Being able to effectively communicate with individuals and that your system of communication is set up in a well working manor.  I also connect with this characteristic through dance because we have certain things we say to each other that only we will understand and that would make no sense to anyone else.
  • 3) Having an affective system of communication and being able to communicate with other people. People do this through such ways as news letters, email, journals. I can also connect with this because through dance if our instructors wanted us all to now something they would hand out memo's or mail a letter home so we would be aware of the current events going on.
  • 4) Having a specific genres or ways of communication such as a blog or email among members. This is something that is difficult to copy by non members. I can connect with this because we come up with different unique dance moves so that we can beat other dance studios.
  • 5) Having a type of lingo or jargon within the community to help communicate between members. Dancers use this type of community because we use french terms in ballet that only ballerinas would know and french people.
  • 6) Having change within the group and being able to support one and other. The connection I make with this is as dancers we are able to rely on one and other and know that we will always be there for one and other.
3. Yes I would say they are both discourse communities but they are just different discourse communities. If we were to go through every class with the same people we had our first college class with until graduate school we would have a stronger discourse community and we would have a lot more to talk about. Because we only have class together for 10 weeks its hard to a strong discourse community among each other because we are only together for such a short time.
5. The discourse community I am going to talk about is the 4th floor of Jeff that I live on. The set of goals we all agree on our the community living rules. We can affectively communicate with individuals on our floor by always being open to talk to one and other. We are all able to communicate with each other because we have became a family but in the beginning we were not all this close. Our specific ways of communication are texting, Facebook, Twitter ect. We have created a specific lingo for our floor because we say random stuff that only our floor will ever understand. The change within our group and being able to support others is a struggle sometimes when people leave and than new people come in but we have all learned to get along so well together.
Meta Moments
After reading this article I have considered the six characteristics Swales talks about in his article I will think about his characteristics that he explains but I do not think they have affected my writing in any way because I only write for class and I don't write for fun.
Response to Swales
After reading this article I better understand the meaning of a discourse community. When Porter was discussing the discourse community I didn't really understand it Swales gave me a better understand of what a discourse community real is. This help me to better understand other peoples discourse communities I see it more as of a click like in high school its just now you are able to see into their community and attempt to be able to understand their community. Now I am better able to explore others communities.
Summary to Gee
In his article "Literacy, Discourse, & Linguistics" Gee explains his view of a discourse and how you idea of a discourse affects the discourse community you belong to. Gee brings in so many ideas just to name a few such as meta knowledge which is learning something and translating it into your own language and he also talks about mushfake is when you make do with something less when the real thing is not available. I think Gee somewhat agrees and disagrees with what Swales says in the previous article. Gee says that people do not need to be pro's to enter there discourse communities but they need to be fluent in the language.
Questions 3-8, 11, & 12 or 13
3. Discourse with a capital D is a combination of saying & doing, believing and being valued. Discourse with a lower cased d means connecting languages so that they make sense to the members within the community. Yes this makes sense to me because discourse communities are like clicks and everyone falls into one.
4. Primary Discourse- what we use to make sense of the world and to connect with others. Secondary Discourse- our gained after we socialize with the members within our community. Dominant Discourse- are secondary discourse communities that bring potential acquisitions of social goods. (money, social status)  NonDominant Discourse- are secondary discourse communities that bring solidarity within a certain social network.
5. Identity is an implication of a claim explaining how we are all apart of a discourse community and that we are all separated by different views we make.
6. I make connections with Gee's views of a discourse and identity because you do things without really thinking about it.
7. Gee is saying that when someone is taught something within there discourse community and that they need to be able to stay up on the knowledge of the group so that they can stay up on the current information. I see this through joining a sorority because when you rush you are expected to learn all of this information and secrets after joining the sorority.
8. Dominant Discourse Tests happen because they want the members within their community to stay up on the knowledge and information of the community in which they belong to. The benefits of members to a dominant discourse community is that they are always up on current information and changes that are occurring within their community daily.
11. Metaknowledge is when you learn something and you translate it into your own language so that you are better able to understand what they are saying. Its value according to Gee is being able to have insight within the community you are apart of.
12. The discourse  that I am apart of is Patty's Dance Center I danced there for 15 years and we were a second family to one and other we shared similar interests and we were always there for one and other and still are even though we have graduated. As my fellow dancers and I have grown together we have also failed and succeed together.
AEI 2 & 4
2. My primary discourse community is my family because my parents raised me to believe in certain beliefs and values that they thought were important for my sister and I to learn. By being born into a certain family you are born into a certain discourse community that your family was apart of before you were even born. Since I was born into a certain discourse community we are able to communicate in a very affective manor and we can tell by tone of voice and phrases how one and other is feeling.
4. I am able to navigate within my many discourse communities because I balance all my many communities and am able to balance the differences between them and am able to agree with a variety of people because I am apart of so many discourse communities.
Response to Gee
I found this article very difficult to read and it lost my attention due to the length of the article but once I got through the article I found it very useful because there are so many ideas of what a discourse community and everyone has their own opinion of what it is. This article helped me explore discourse community as a whole but also as an individual giving me multiple views on a discourse communities.

Cover Letter 3

n our website, Literacies in Schools we discuss the positive and negative effects of many different types of schools. Does the school that you attended affect your literacy levels. We supported this claim by interviewing a variety of people who attended public, private, & boarding schools and also told each of our own individual stories. Does the school you go to and the amount of money you have affect the way you learned within your school. The parts of our website that worked well together were the interviews with others and being able to tie them together with our own stories. We need to work more on tying together everything as a whole within our paper to keep our point flowing through our website. I would love the readers to give us as much feedback as possible so that we can make our website the best we can tell us anything and everything we could fix. If we were given more time we wanted to tie in some inter city students stories that were in the freedom writers diary also we talked about tying in sports. The types of sports you were offered at your school and the division your schools sports were in.

Homework #13

Response to Cecchini & Perez
In their article "Motivation in Literacy Development" they discuss the factors that drive people to read. They interview 8 first year honor's students at The University of Central Florida by interviewing these students they were able to better understand there successes in literacy. By doing these interviews they were better able to understand what drove them to become literate family, friends, teachers, & how technology played a role in their literacies. They say that motivation plays a huge role in students literacy levels because if you are motivated to learn than you will but if you are not that you will simple fail.
Do author's put their own histories into the papers?
I did not find any evidence of the authors histories in this article. They just used the information they revived from the student interviews as facts within their article. I think the author's should have added some of their own histories within this article because it would have made the article more creditable.
Do you refer to yourself in 1st or 3rd person?
In this article I would refer to myself in 1st person because it sounds better since you are talking about your self. If you were to talk in 3rd because it would sound interesting but I don't know if that would be a good thing or a bad thing.
Reflection to Cecchini & Perez
I enjoyed reading this article and I thought it was written very well and was interesting to read. Once I read this article I remembered it brought back memories of book it in elementary school were we read 5 books and than got a free pizza at Pizza Hut.

For my paper 4 I am going to discuss how literacy in schools adversely affects you use of technology.

Final Paper #2

With this paper I am trying to explain my writing process to readers. To discuss my issue with writing and how I focus to much on the pre write and not enough time on the writing and revising part of my paper.     I think this because I spend so much time on my pre writing it takes me hours and I don’t take as much time on my actual paper. I take to much time on the pre writing process and don’t spend enough time on the writing of the paper and if it’s a good use of my time or not. Because the pre writing lays the groundwork for my paper and it makes writing my paper a lot easier to write because I already have all my ideas down and the layout of my paper I just need to elaborate. I want readers to know that pre writing is an important part of the writing process and that you should spend a fair amount of time on it. If I was given more time I would look into other writers writing processes and compare them to mine. After me peer edit I took into consideration the corrections Alex made me my paper he told me to re due a sentence and to change up the sentence structure of a few of my sentences.

Homework #12

Baron Summary
In his article From Pencils to Pixels Baron talks about how he annoyed with how technology has made our society extremely lazy. He talks about the different levels of how technology has progressed and that the pencil is being used less to write and its all technology based.
WAW Questions
2. Yes, I agree with this statement because technology is taking over the fundamental ways of writings from the past via using the new technologies of the present and future for the writing processes.
4. The typewriter was a piece of literary technology that at its time was a prime piece of writing but now that there has been many progressions in the typing process the type writer has faded to the black.
6. The pictures in the reading makes the article more entertaining to read. The pictures add to the article because they help describe the situation going on throughout the text.
Baron Response
I found this article very interesting and I liked how to talked about the progression of technology and I never saw technology in a negative light but I guess now after reading this article all of our advancements in technology may not have been for the better when you are talking about the writing aspect of it.
Malcolm X Summary
In the article Learning to Read Malcolm X article he talks about his personal experiences he had with reading and writing and all about his experiences that he encountered while he was in jail and when he went through the dictionary in jail.
WAW Questions
1. Malcolm X's article is geared towards people who struggled with reading and writing. This article is seen as very inspirational and gives the hopeless hope.
2. Malcolm says that literacy is being able to read and understand. School based literacy is similar because in school you are either seen as a literate person who can read and write or an illiterate person who can not.
3. School, prison, and books were seen as Malcolm X's literacy sponsors. The books were an important literacy sponsors for Malcolm X because without those books he would not have been able to become literate and be able to read and write.
4. Yes, I think this was a case with Malcolm because when he was reading books and the dictionary he would get upset with himself when he was un able to understand the words.
6. I think Malcolm did have the motivation to read because when you are reading recreationally than when you are forced to do it. When you read recreationally reading is a lot more enjoyable to do in your free time and students in college are forced to get the grades.
AEI
1. I think due to our wide advances in technology students are more widely educated and that there is spell check to correct the errors in your work that they did not have in the past. But also all of the social networking cites and text messaging has caused for a lack in our grammar and caused error's within our writing.
Malcolm X Response
I enjoyed reading this article it helped me with understanding how much handwork and dedication it takes to make yourself into a literate person if you did not have the privilege of being educated. This [iece was very motivational and it showed that hard work really does pay off in the end if you try hard and apply yourself.
 Alexie Summary
In his article The Joy of Reading & Writing he talks about how he first learned how to read through comic books.
WAW Questions
1. There are expectations based on child literacy standings and what background they are. When you think you did well on a test and you get the test back and you got a bad grade and than we you get a paper back with an good grade you are all happy inside. When you get back a good grade you wanna keep doing good in that class and keep on raking in the good grades but when you receive a bad grade you get down on your luck and don't want to do assignments for that class.
AEI
1. Yes, I think this is the case if you are willing to work hard for something you can achieve anything you strive for.
Alexie Response
I found this article interesting and the story had a positive message and that if you try hard you can beat any obstacle that stands in your way. This article is very motivational and inspiring.

Homework #11

Brandt Summary
In the article Sponsors of Literacy Brandt talks about how people actually learn how to write a paper and how they acquire there writing skills. She interviews multiple people of different ages, backgrounds, and social classes. After she interviews everyone she backs all her information with statistics and says that writers teach new writes how to write.
WAW Questions
1. Brandt defines literacy as sponsor as agents, local or distant, concerte or abstract, who teach, model, support, recruit, extort, deny, or suppress literacy and gain advantage buy it in some way. They are usually smart, wealthy and religious.
3. Sponsored sometimes misappropriate their literacy lessons by not considering the different class levels of the students they are teaching and they do not realize that  not all students have the same access to everything.
4. When Brandt talks about using the term stratified she is explains peoples status levels and how they are arranged.
AEI
Growing up my primary literacy sponsors were my parents and family members, teachers, and friends. My parents and family members taught me religious vaules, the difference of right and wrong, doing good deeds for others. My  teachers taught me academic values. My friends taught me how to gain support through others. I feel as though I can not think of any literacy's that I have not been given access to. I may have not discovered some yet but I think they are within reach if and when I discover them.
Brandt Response
I found this article somewhat hard to understand but once I got through it I found it very useful and I am glad we got to read it because it got me thinking about things that I have been given that others haven't and how that affected my life and academic career. I agree with what Brandt says and it makes me think about how others that are of lower social standing have less academic chances that we do.
